Information from a session with SEEK regarding results of a satisfaction survey of 3000 job seekers:
  • Job security has increased and so too has unhappiness in the work place
  • Employers cannot be complacent and expect staff to be grateful
  • Staff want: self development, a positive work environment and the feeling of being appreciated by being engaged
  • Q: should management KPI's include 'staff motivation' as a key KPI?
  • 68% of employees have their 'eyes open' for other options
  • Morale is seen as an issue – with 49% stating negative morale in the workplace
  • 52% would not recommend the company they work for
  • 49% want better management – as in well trained managers
  • The BIG 4 drivers / motivation: stress levels, quality of management, My Boss, career development
  • Morale is the single biggest predictor of someone feeling secure
  • Gen Y on the lookout to move
  • Traits considered valuable in managers;
    a) openness and honesty @ 65%
    b) communication @ 63%
    c) encourage and listen to suggestions @ 61% 
    d) support the team @ 60% 
    e) regular feedback @ 40%
Conclusions:
  • It is a critical time to protect your employer brand
  • Managers cannot afford to be complacent; protect those you have & retain
  • Cost of re-employment is still high
  • Skill shortages do exist and could further emerge very quickly
  • Positive focus as opposed to negative
