Tempers were sure flared recently.
At the U.S. Open, Serena Williams screamed an obscenity-laced rant during her match. It cost her Open.
And at the VMAs, Kanye West burst on to the stage during Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech to proclaim his pick (Beyonce) for the win. Later, during Beyonce’s own speech, the singer called up Swift to give the country star her time in the spotlight, which had been upstaged by West.
Both Serena Williams and Kanye West are very, very talented individuals. And though both apologized, both remain scorned by their fans for their respective outbursts.
As they should.
But perhaps we can learn something from these poor sports.
- Don’t let your ego get the best of you at your job. Sure, you do a great job and you work hard. And your Mum says you’re cool. That’s awesome. But that doesn’t mean you’re infallible. Maybe you did “make a foot fault.” Recognize your mistake and move on.
- Keep your personal feelings in check. Maybe one of your co-workers, whom you don’t really like, got the promotion you were expecting. Before you run to your boss telling him exactly what think – consider...maybe your co-worker did earn it. And if your co-worker does have a higher position than you, now is the time to suck up, not undermine.
- Think before you act. Want to throw a tantrum about your colleague’s missed deadline or lateness or whatever is bothering you? Well, that indiscretion will be forgotten eventually. But no one will forget when you yelled like a lunatic at your colleague in front of everyone. Figure out a way to work out your problems in a professional manner. Ask your boss or human resources for help if you need to.
Although actually, you know what? Go ahead. Because some would say that there is nothing funnier than watching a colleague screaming like a lunatic.
