Redundancy Steps

Facing  Redundancy?

Some steps to think about to formulate an action plan.
Having studied various resources for helpful relevant advice plus adding what we know to be true we have compiled the following comments for you, which we hope will be helpful.

Firstly it’s important not to panic and take it personally. Hard we know, but do try to consider there could be an up-side, as new doors can open. Hindsight shows that when we look back at the CV’s of the people we know had their roles made redundant in the early 90’s - it is interesting to see what people have gone on to do.

For younger people – it’s all new territory so even more important to reinforce that redundancy can be viewed, not a hindrance, but as a benefit.

Take action. Don’t sit back. This is one time that being proactive is essential. Update your CV.

Talk through options with someone. It’s important to get an independent view. Many use this as a catalyst to seek career coaching.  CLICK HERE to meet Jo Mills

And some more detailed comments:
  1. Redundancy can happen to anyone at any time. Remember redundancy is not the same as getting the sack. When an employee is dismissed, he or she loses his or her job; if there is a redundancy, the job itself disappears.
  2. Despite the demoralising effect redundancy can have, you should still focus on your skills and experience as you will still have plenty to offer employers. The key is to stay motivated and take some positive steps back onto the path to employment:
  3. Make the most of your contacts and do your best to expand your circle of friends. By keeping informed about the job market, you are more likely to hear about any suitable vacancies.
  4. Consider a change of career. If the sector you just left looks unlikely to recover for some time, consider other sectors where your skills could be applicable.
  5. Many jobs are not advertised so promote yourself to any company you’d be interested in working for.
  6. Register with recruitment companies and all the relevant job sites to receive up-to-date information on the latest vacancies.
