How to promote diversity and inclusion in your workplace

A recent Frog Recruitment poll found that 70% of job seekers are rating diversity, inclusion, and company culture as a very important aspect of their work place. Diversity in the workplace is essential in create a thriving business, especially when it comes to employee engagement, encouraging creativity and innovation.

Diversity and inclusion in your workplace connects people from all walks of life, which, when managed well, creates a high performance and innovative working environment. It’s about valuing, recognising, respecting, embracing and including individual differences and understanding that by doing so, it adds value to the workplace.

It’s about creating the opportunity for everyone to fully participate in the workplace productively and successfully, progress their careers equally and receive equivalent rewards and benefits for doing so. It’s about fair treatment for everyone, regardless of their background, education, ethnicity, gender, age, religion, sexual orientation, disability or any other characteristic.

Organisations promoting and encouraging diversity and inclusion in their workplace understand that this can lead to many benefits for a team’s culture and environment. Here are three quick tips to help promote diversity and inclusion in your workplace.

Everyone is uniquely motivated
Connect with the employees and ask about what motivates them. Making the effort to inquire about their personal needs and work preferences, means that they will feel heard and understood.

Encourage Feedback
Having an open door and communication forum encourages staff to speak up or provide constructive feedback. This can relate to their gender, ethnicity, sexuality, age, or other factors. It really does lead to a more inclusive and happier work culture.
 
Work Flexibility 
It’s about accommodating everyone’s different lifestyle needs and expectations individually and not assuming all employees fit the same mould. One size does not fit all. Trying to find the right fit for everyone is vital.
