Te whiwhinga mahi | The Opportunity
A specialist policy team is seeking an experienced policy contractor to lead a high-profile piece of regulatory assessment work. This is legislated, nationally significant policy advice, where the decisions made shape outcomes for New Zealand Inc. You'll be the main person on the work, with a principal available to test your thinking against.
He aha koe e whiwhi ai? | What's in it for you?
  • A chance to own a nationally significant piece of policy work from day one.
  • Indicative contract rate of $130 per hour
  • 5–month contract with an immediate start
  • One day a week working from home, with the rest of the week in the office
  • A busy, collaborative team with a principal to bounce thinking off
  • Visible, ministerial-level work in a specialist policy area
Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the Role
Airline alliance applications must be assessed under legislation to determine whether an arrangement amounts to cartel behaviour or ultimately delivers benefit to New Zealand. External economists provide the analysis; your job is the policy thinking on top of it. You'll turn that analysis into clear briefings and advice for ministers, working at pace on an application that has arrived out of the blue. It's a role for someone who enjoys making complex economic material land as sharp, decision-ready policy advice.
Ngā kawenga | Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the policy assessment end to end
  • Interpret and translate outsourced economic analysis into policy positions
  • Draft briefings and written advice to ministers
  • Apply the legislated assessment framework, weighing competition concerns against national benefit
  • Work with an external economic analysis provider to get what the policy work needs
  • Test thinking with a principal and contribute to wider team priorities
  • Deliver to tight, externally driven timeframes
  • Keep stakeholders informed as the assessment progresses
Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills & Experience
  • Policy background with experience translating economic analysis into policy advice
  • Confidence working with economic inputs — an economics background is useful, though you don't need to be an economist
  • Strong briefing and ministerial advice writing
  • Able to run a workstream independently as the main person on the mahi
  • Comfortable operating in a busy team currently navigating organisational change
  • Available to start as soon as possible for a 5 month contract
