What's up dog?
Meet Sapphire - Our Golden Girl with a Heart of Gold Saph is a beautiful golden retriever/Labrador who recently celebrated her 10th birthday, yes there was a special cake just for her, but don't let her age fool you - she is the beating heart of Terrace School in Waipukurau. For the past few years, Saph has been coming to school every day with her owner, and in that time, she has become so much more than just a school dog - she's a friend, a comforter, a silent supporter, and a much-loved member of our school whÄnau. Each morning, students arrive with one mission: to find Saph and start their day with a warm cuddle and a wagging tail. She's got her own cosy bed set up in a junior classroom, and from the moment the day starts, she's surrounded by kids (and often parents too) who just need that moment of calm and connect to get their day off to the right start. During class time, Saph rests quietly in her corner, always ready for a pat, a story read aloud, or to sit beside a student working hard on their learning. She brings a sense of calm and comfort that no lesson plan can teach - just her presence is enough to help students feel safe and supported. Come break time, Saph transforms into the playground star - gracefully strolling the grounds with a trail of children behind her, hoping for a turn to throw a ball or walk alongside her. Though she prefers a slower pace these days, she still shines brightest when she's surrounded by her biggest fans. But it's in the tough moments that Saph's true magic shows. When students are upset, overwhelmed, or unable to return to class, it's often Saph - not the teacher or the principal - who reaches them. A quiet walk, a shared stick-throwing session, or simply her calming presence can bring a child back from distress to a place where learning is possible again. Saph is more than a pet - she's therapy without the title, a loyal listener without judgement, and the emotional anchor so many of our tamariki rely on. We truly believe she is the definition of a Top Dog, and our school wouldn't be the same without her.
