What's up dog?
I was born with Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy, a condition that slowly weakens my muscles over time. As I've grown older, simple things like walking, standing, or picking something up have become much harder and sometimes dangerous. I've had several serious falls, including a dislocated hip, broken noses, and concussions. Now, I rely heavily on my wheelchair. When I turned 21, I made a life-changing decision: I wanted a companion not just for company, but one that could help give me back some independence. I dreamed of a spaniel, but none were available nearby. Then, unexpectedly, Arlo a bright, bubbly English Cocker Spaniel came into my life. From the moment we met, I knew we were meant to take on the world together. Arlo is almost 2 years old and 1 year into his training, and he does far more than just assist me physically.
He's my lifeline, my shadow, my joy. He's trained to alert others if I fall, stay beside me in crisis, and fetch crucial items like my medical bracelet or phone. When I'm unable to move or call for help, he does it for me. We've worked on this since day one, and his loyalty in those terrifying moments has kept me safe more than once. But Arlo's impact doesn't stop there. He comes with me to work every day at Barfoot & Thompson in Waiuku, where he's become a much-loved member of the team. My colleagues spoil him with attention and take him out for breaks, which he relishes. His favourite part of the day? Our morning visit to the local cafe. Arlo sits in his own chair, watching every customer enter with curious eyes and a wagging tail. He has a habit of expecting a "Tummy Tax" from regulars a belly scratch in exchange for his warm welcome. It's safe to say he's become a local celebrity fondly known as the "Town Mascot." He also has his own Instagram page, where the community follows his daily adventures.
Whether he's out walking with me or simply sitting proudly beside my desk, Arlo brings comfort, smiles, and connection to everyone he meets. He has a special gift for brightening the days of strangers and friends alike especially children and elderly locals who stop just to say hello. Most importantly, Arlo has transformed my mental health. Living with a progressive condition can be isolating and frightening, but with Arlo by my side, I feel stronger, more grounded, and never alone. He gives me purpose, courage, and companionship. We take care of each other every step of the way. Arlo is more than a service dog. He is my protector, my co-worker, my best friend and the heartbeat of our little town.
