What's up dog?
As a service dog, my primary role is to assist my mum, Kim,with her mobility and independence. I'm always by her side, ready to lend a helping paw whenever needed..
Iwas placed with my mum originally to also provide balance and stability support when my mumcould still walks By bracing against her, I help distribute her weight and prevent falls. As mum condition progressed my many skills moved towards alerting her as she is deaf, knowing where the safest route is as her vision declines as well.
Retrieving dropped items is another important task I perform. If my mum accidentally drops something, I can pick it up and bring it back to her, restoring her independence . I was trained as a pup for so many situations so when a wheelchair become mums mode of transportation , I manoeuvred easily into different a new role, I’m a flexible service dog and was trained in multiple areas meaning as mum health changes I can still provide assistance
But perhaps most importantly, I offer constant companionship and emotional support. The bond I share with my mum is deeply meaningful. She can rely on me to be a calming, steadfast presence, ready to provide comfort and reassurance whenever they need it.. This also means my dad can feel mum is safe when he’s not with her
Through our partnership, I'm able to dramatically improve my mum mobility, safety, and overall quality of life. It's a privilege to serve as her trusted companion, assistant and best friend, helping them navigate the world with confidence and ease.. We can go to the supermarket, doctors even the hairdressers together , just us against the world which isn’t made with disabled humans in mind.
We also take our role as educators very seriousply in the community. People gravitate towards my fluffy self but mum explains politely that a working dog can’t be patted or distracted, she’s always clam and explains my role so people understand my purpose, I know when a human has a phone aimed at me, they would like a photo and I’m happy to pose in my working gear anytime!
Recently we joined a local council focus groupto assist new residents in our area, I go to meeting and sit politely. I also joined mum in the marketing videos for this. Next week we’re off to our new local community hub and library opening to again be in media work, the more visible we are, the more we can spread a message of inclusivity . I
