The ABC’s of a Temporary Services Recruitment Consultant

Logan Slabbert • March 25, 2019

Last night I received an email from person whom I assisted several times. Since 2013, I have built a strong professional relationship with him and he was emailing me to tell me that as a result of the temporary assignment in which I had assisted him, he has been offered a permanent job with them. This is just wonderful news and in his email, he thanked me for everything I had done for him and how much he appreciated me fighting for him and believing in him when nobody else did.

It is times like this that I absolutely love what I do.

I am changing people’s lives !

But with that comes a massive responsibility. We need to make sure that we care enough for other people to want to help them and go the extra mile for them. We need to remember that sometimes the job seekers, for whatever the reason, has had to experience a fair bit of disappointment, rather than success. Job seekers are the most important part of our jobs. As a temporary services recruitment consultant, I build strong relationships with temporary ‘talent’. I know their life stories, their kid’s names and their ups and downs. I am an extension of their support structure.

I live by MY ABC’s of being a temporary services recruiter, it has always worked for me.

A – Always

Always be there for the job seeker, always be honest and give the good, the bad and the ugly. I have driven around job seekers for their interviews and assignments, as I did not want them to miss out on any opportunities. I did this, so they can know I will always have their best interests in mind.

B – Be there

Just be there for them. Be there when it is going well, be the person who they can turn to when they are having a bad day. As a temporary worker, you sometimes feel that you don’t ‘belong’. As a temp recruiter, it is my responsibility to ensure that my temp knows that I will always be there and that they are a part of the organisation.

C – Commitment

You need to show them that you are committed to helping them and in most cases, your temp will be committed to you. I have sent texts on Sunday nights for temps to start assignments on a Monday, and they were always committed to the hiring manager and me.

With one job, you can change somebody’s life. With caring and always being there for your temp, you make life long connections
